About S-Turns
The last twelve miles leading to the confluence with the Alsek, the valley widens allowing for far reaching views and thicker riparian vegetation. Below Basement Creek is a channelized series of fast S-Turns that is a fresh change from the braided sections above. Pay attention here, The river is swift, with sporadic holes and strainers on the outsides of the turns. You can find campsites, clear water pools, and plenty of firewood through here. Some groups camp in the S-Turns to set up a “stay over” at Melt Creek. A stay over is arriving at a campsite in the late morning or early afternoon, giving you ample time to explore while still making progress downstream.
