The Pacuare River is full of rapids and beautiful waterfalls so it’s no surprise it ends with a bang. Dos Montañas is a long Class III and IV rapid that’s just a few kilometers before Siquirres/takeout. The name comes from the Dos Montañas canyon, which begins immediately below the rapid.
This is a rapid that’s fun at low and high flows. The entrance is a rock garden that’s fairly straightforward to navigate. Towards the middle you need to get left and then aim for a left channel or chute – far on river left – to avoid large holes and/or boulders. After this, you need to move back right to finish the rapid. It’s a long, and sometimes confusing rapid, so it’s definitely worth watching a few videos on it to get an initial idea of how it’s laid out.
