“River to Rim: A Guide to Place Names Along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon from Lake Powell to Lake Mead,” now in its third edition, remains an indispensable resource for river guides, private boaters, and anyone fascinated by the history of the GC.
Written in a downstream moving, mile by mile format, the book belongs in your ammocan or dry bag for quick reference of rapid and camp names and historical POIs. While it’s not a rivermap, it complements existing GC guides and maps exceptionally well.
Who’s Randy and why is there a rock named after him? What about June Bug, or the Bridge of Sighs? While some names in the Grand Canyon are more obvious, such as Ten Mile Rock, many others have a deeper history and story behind them. Author Nancy Brian does a wonderful job of untangling river guide lore with truth and presents it in an easy-to-read book that’s fun to follow as you float downstream through the Grand Canyon. A must-have for river runners.
