How to run Grapevine Rapid

A center-right entrance is standard. There is a hole on the left-side of the tongue at the top, and a rock pile on the right. It is important to stay clear of the rock pile. At lower water, make sure to enter in the tongue as there are shallow rocks around the entrance.  Enter just to the left of the rocks on the right and then work your way back towards the center. There is a hole at the bottom of the rapid on the center-right that can be avoided by passing to the left.

Jet boat incident

While there have been plenty of successful downstream trips on the Grand Canyon, there has been only one successful upstream bid. In July of 1960, a New Zealander named Jon Hamilton led a group of jet boats up the Colorado River. At Grapevine Rapid one of the four jet boats, the “Wee Yellow”, sank here after swamping in the waves.
