About Alligator Rock

Look for the large rock that appears as if an alligator’s head is poking out of the water. The painted eyes are the giveaway. This is a great indicator of what is immediately downstream – Limestone Rapid, the first Class IV of the run. The eyes are even glancing towards the rapid, seemingly saying “Pay attention here.”

Important swimming notice and attention all writers!

This location has proven popular with journalists to list Alligator Rock as a safe swimming area. This is not correct at nearly all water flows. Do not swim here as Class IV Limestone Rapid is just 100 feet downstream. And if you do swim here, please – please! – wear a PFD.
